Jane Kidd: Curious
23 Jun 2018 – 26 Aug 2018
Jane Kidd, Curiosities Series: Pairing #4 2016
Organized by Kelowna Art Gallery
Kidd is one of Canada’s preeminent artists working in textile. She lives in Salt Spring Island. The exhibition encompasses the tapestry series Curiosities, Wonderland, Land Sentence and Possession. In nightmarish visions of genetic modification, Curiosities depicts parts of various organisms spliced together to form alluring chimeras. The shaped weavings of Land Sentence are based on satellite photographs of environmental devastation, executed in the toxic palette of the computer screen. Kidd’s commitment to handwork in realizing these images of technology run amok is remarkably apt.
A catalogue with an essay by Amy Gogarty accompanies the exhibition, together with a sample tapestry fragment for tactile exploration.
THE EVENT Tuesday 21 August at 12:00-1:30pm
The event will begin at MSVU Art Gallery, located on the first floor of Seton Academic Center and conclude at the Community Garden located between the Meadows building and Caritas Residence (see links for exact locations on map). It is about an 8-minute walk uphill to the garden and unfortunately the garden is not barrier-free - there is a short hill with 5 steps to climb up to the garden from the parking area and the garden pathways are narrow. Limited seating will be provided for those needing a drive to the garden. Sweaters for the Art Gallery visit are recommended as the space is air conditioned. ASL interpretation is available for MSVU Art Gallery public events. Please email by August 15 to request an interpreter.
