Charmaine Wheatley: Chesterfield
Charmaine Wheatley: Chesterfield

Charmaine Wheatley. Chesterfield 2000 (detail of bookwork).
24 Jun 2001 – 22 Jul 2001

Curator Cliff Eyland for Gallery 1.1.1, Winnipeg

Raised in Halifax, Charmaine Wheatley took up residence in New York City after graduating from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She is known for teasingly erotic subject matter.

The exhibition includes documentation of her Agricola Street storefront performance in 1997 and another Halifax-era piece, the bookwork Cambridge Suites. Also on view are traces of the artistís later performances in strip clubs and the chocolate Moonpies cast from her buttocks.

Artistís Talks
Visitors had an opportunity to meet the "performance provocateuse" at the Gallery on Sunday, 24 June. The next day, everyone was invited to attend the panel discussion, "Talking with Charmaine," which was held at the Khyber Club, 1588 Barrington Street. Presenters on the panel included Dorota Glowacka, University of Kingís College Contemporary Studies; Sarah Hollenberg, artist and curator, and Jayne Wark, NSCAD History of Art.
