AlcuinThe Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design

In 2016, The Alcuin Society held its 34th annual competition, The Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada. The awards recognize exceptional merit in Canadian graphic design. The 43 winning books were selected out of 230 submitted, representing the work of designers from nine provinces and 98 publishers.

Reading the Image: Poetics of the Black Diaspora brings together the works of artists Deanna Bowen (Toronto), Christopher Cozier (Trinidad and Tobago), Michael Fernandes (Nova Scotia), and Maud Sulter (Scotland). The exhibition includes photography, video, and installation, each work aesthetically distinct yet linked to the others through a shared preoccupation with Black embodiment, subjectivity, and agency.

In 2004, Eye Level Gallery commissioned Paperwork30– a limited edition of 25 boxed sets, each containing one original work by each of 20 Halifax-affiliated artists—to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary. MSVU acquired one set for its permanent collection.

Michael Fernandes: Room of Fears and Fixing Room

Room of Fears is an installation consisting of one-sentence expressions of fear submitted by members of the public via e-mail and through “comments” boxes. In an adjacent space, Fixing Room displays items submitted to the gallery in response to an open call, for “things you never got round to fixing, things that are broken.” distributed around Halifax.
