n 2016, The Alcuin Society held its 35th annual competition, The Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada. The awards recognize exceptional merit in Canadian graphic design. The 35 winning books were selected out of 211 submitted, representing the work of designers from nine provinces and 93 publishers.

The paintings in this exhibition combine hard-edge with gestural abstraction, generating tensions between flatness and the illusion of spatial depth. As the artist describes it, “marks ...are discovered along the spectrum between abstraction and strategies of pictorial representation.”


Maria Hupfield, Jingle SpiralMaria Hupfield: The One Who Keeps on Giving

The title of the exhibition is also the title of a new video installation named after the translation of Hupfield’s mother’s Anishinaabe name. The video documents a performance by the artist and her siblings in Parry Sound, an event re-enacted with a smaller cast at each tour venue.


Jane Kidd, Curiosities Series: Pairing #4 2016Jane Kidd: Curious

Kidd is one of Canada’s preeminent artists working in textile. She lives in Salt Spring Island. The exhibition encompasses the tapestry series Curiosities, Wonderland, Land Sentence and Possession. In nightmarish visions of genetic modification, Curiosities depicts parts of various organisms spliced together to form alluring chimeras.

In the role of Ms. Kitty, Julie Hollenbach inhabits a domestic “set” decorated wi th works that incorporate aspects of hobby craft and/or declarations of gender-variant identity. Ms. Kitty presents herself as a femme leisure crafter whose interest in home renovation devolves into identity reconstruction.


Christiane Poulin, Winds of Change: A Lace-scape 2016Prospect 18: Christiane Poulin. Echoes

Exhibitions in the Prospect series introduce artists in the early phases of their careers. A retired physician, Poulin recently graduated from NSCAD with a BFA in Textiles and the 2017 Starfish Student Art Award. She lives in Halifax. The woven structures of her site-oriented installation allude to Brutalist design integrated into a landscape.

The provocative title of this exhibition is meant to prompt skepticism about the medium-based categories that still define large public collections, such as those at the National Gallery of Canada.

The Art Gallery’s special mandate to collect textile-based art, due to the medium’s traditional association with women, is augmented in this selection by the inclusion of another material associated with domesticity—aluminum foil. All of the works have in common the tactile quality of softness.

Anna Torma: Needleworks

Anna Torma grew up on a farm in Hungary, where she learned the techniques of hand sewing and embroidery from her mother and grandmother. She enrolled at the Hungarian University of Applied Arts in Budapest in the late 1970s, at a time when censorship constricted many aspects of cultural expression.
