Using photography as her principal visual medium, McEachern has produced a number of projects that take gender-determined lived experience as their point of departure. The titles of her projects describe the entry point for her inquiries: The Home (1983), The Family in the Context of Childrearing (1983-84), On Living at Home (1998), The Creation of Desire (1992), Questions of Nature (1995), Backyard Community (2002), and, most recently, Structures of Meaning (2004)—a retrospective exhibition organized by Andrea Kunard, curator, at the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography. McEachern has taught photography, the history of photography, and visual culture at NSCAD University for many years. She and her family live in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
